About Eva Unit 00: Unit-00 was the first successful attempt to create an Evangelion by the Gehirn research organization.  Unit-00 was never intended for combat, and was instead intended to be the Eva system's prototype.  From the knowledge obtained from Unit-00's construction they were able to create subsequent units suited to combat conditions.

During Unit-00's first contact experiment it went berserk and nearly killed the operators and crew monitoring the experiment.   Unit-00's pilot, Rei Ayanami, was severely injured in the accident.  The unit was sealed in bakelite, and restored to working order later.

It was sortied in Operation Yashima, but due to the combination of a feedback error and severe damage, it didn't survive combat.  The unit was rebuilt, and its orange armor plating was changed to blue, it also recieved armament casings, among other upgrades, making it suitable for combat conditions.

Unit-00 is fairly stable, it had one other instance of instability.  During the first contact experiment with Shinji Ikari, it went berserk in the very same way as it had before.   In the first instance Gendo was nearly killed, and in the second Rei was almost killed.

Unit-00 was self destructed by Rei in order to save Shinji from and to destroy the sixteenth angel Armisael.
