About Eva Unit 02: Eva Unit 02 was the third Evangelion Unit developed by Nerv.  It was built at Nerv's Germany branch, and later shipped by sea for operation in Japan.  Unlike the previous two models, Unit 02 was designed with combat conditions in mind.  In that aspect Unit 02 is superior to its predecessors, as the forethought in its construction shows through its stability in activation tests and combat scenarios.

Unit 02's firey red exterior matches well with the temperament of its designated pilot, the second child, Asuka Langley Sohryu, who pilots the unit with grace and elegance.   Asuka holds a very personal connection with the unit, equating her ability to pilot it with self worth, hence why she is the only one to pilot the unit through the majority of the series.  It is not until she disintegrates and spirals into madness that she is replaced by Kaworu Nagisa.

She recovers once she discovers the nature of the mind of the Eva, and finds her mother within it.  She is revitalized for a brief moment, as she fights off the UN forces and the Eva Series, sent to destroy Nerv.  However, her rebirth is shattered as she is taken out by a clone lance, and the unit is torn to shreds by the Eva Series.
