PROLOGUE

This film will open with a shot of a semi-futuristic helicopter soaring through the air.

The helicopter touches down upon ice and snow.

The title card informs us that we are in Antarctica.

The door pops open, an American scientist walks out.

He is seen by a Japanese scientist who has been waiting for him. He has his teenage daughter with him.

DR. KATSURAGI (in English)
Hello, Dr. Tyler.

He bows.

Dr. Tyler walks up to him.

DR. TYLER
Hello, Dr. Katsuragi.  Is this your daughter?

DR. TYLER
Yes, this is my daughter, Misato.

MISATO
Nice to meet you..

Misato bows.

DR. TYLER
So, why have you called me up here to the Antarctic Base?

DR. KATSURAGI
Just yesterday, Ikari and I found something..

DR. TYLER
So, what did you find?

DR. KATSURAGI
A strange pulsating lump, we're not sure what it is. But it is alive.

DR. TYLER
That is an amazing discovery. So where is Gendo?

DR. KATSURAGI
He left just this morning, he didn't say why.

DR. TYLER
Well, show me this thing..

DR. KATSURAGI Alright.

Katsuragi, Tyler and Misato hike up to the top of a mountain peak, once they reach the top, they peer down and see a huge, red blob.

It is covered with veins and there is a heart deep inside, beating.

Suddenly, four additional helicopters suddenly touch down on the snow.

Wipe to a shot of it covered up by a tent.

A colonel sits at his desk.

COLONEL RHODES (in English)
Bring them in..

Dr. Katsuragi and Tyler are escorted in by armed US military men.

DR. TYLER (in English)
Sir, what's going on here?

RHODES (in English)
We, the United States army, are taking command of this operation.

DR. TYLER (in English)
But why, sir?

RHODES (in English)
The creature is to be escorted to the United States. The president sees some use in it.

DR. TYLER (in English)
You mean, you're going to use it as a weapon?

RHODES (in English)
Yes, we intend to harness the destructive power of this life form. If the power can be harnessed, we will be able to create the most powerful biological weapons to supply our armies and defend our nation.

DR. KATSURAGI (in English)
Sir, you cannot harness the power of this creature. If you do, great tragedy will befall mankind.

RHODES (in English)
There is nothing you can do, doctor. This is now military business.

DR. KATSURAGI (in English)
You cannot do this! This creature can destroy the human race! It is an Angel!

RHODES (in English)
An angel, what the hell do you mean?!

Meanwhile, a bunch of soldiers are gathered around the being, getting ready to transport it to America. One of them suddenly feels compelled to touch it.

Drs. Katsuragi and Tyler leave the colonel's office.  Katsuragi sees the soldier just about to touch the creature.

Dr. Katsuragi:
DON'T TOUCH IT!!

But it is too late, the soldier lays his fingers on it. At that point the soldier is thrown back and the thing suddenly erupts with light and the blob splits open.

Now we cut to a long shot of the sky darkening and a giant of light emerging from the tent.

A single figure stumbles through the snow, it is Katsuragi, in his arms is his daughter Misato.

He walks toward an escape pod, he puts her in it.

Her eyes open.

MISATO
Father..

DR. KATSURAGI
Misato..

Katsuragi falls over, the pod door closes.

A title card informs us that this day is September 22, 2010.

MISATO (V.O.)
This was the day of the Second Impact.

The Neon Genesis Evangelion title card shows up against a black screen, very similar to the style in the anime.

Shot of glaciers melting and falling into the ocean.

MISATO (V.O.)
The polar icecaps melted. The world became a living hell.

Shots of an enormous tidal wave plowing through the streets of Tokyo. Tokyo Tower is snapped in half. Another tidal wave rages through London and the Big Ben falls over. You see yet a third flood New York and the Empire State Building falls in its wake.

MISATO (V.O.)
Cities flooded all around the world.

In New York you see the Statue of Liberty's hand sticking out from the bottom of the sea.

In Paris you see the Arc de Trio nearly submerged beneath the waves.

Long shot of the Planet Earth from space, it appears to be turning somewhat red in spots.

There is snow over the Pyramids in Egypt.

MISATO (V.O.)
The Earth was thrown off its axis, and thus the climate changed.

People are shown rioting in Kyoto over food.

MISATO (V.O.)
For two years, it was nothing but hell. No electricity, constant riots, territorial wars, food was scarce. Half the world's population, 10 billion people perished in both the Second Impact and the evil times that followed.

Shots of the U.N. meeting in progress, everyone is arguing quite violently. Keel is present, whom you will meet later.

MISATO (V.O.)
The government tried to cover up the incident of the Second Impact as much as they could. They claimed it was a meteor that had struck Earth and caused the polar icecaps to melt. In reality, it was Adam, the first Angel that my father discovered in Antarctica. The U.N. met and decided what should done. They knew that Adam was only the first of the Angels and that more would be coming, when this was, they were not sure.

The NERV logo appears. Shots of Tokyo-3 being rebuilt.

MISATO (V.O.)
They decided to create an organization called Gehirn, eventually renamed NERV, the organization's main goal was to prevent the dreaded Third Impact by combating and destroying the Angels. The major cities of the world were rebuilt. Tokyo was too damaged to be rebuilt, so an area in Nagano Prefecture was selected to be the home of Japan's new capital city, Tokyo-3, an armored fortress created to defend mankind from any Angel attacks.

MISATO (V.O.)
Deep beneath the city, the NERV HQ was built. There we developed our weapon in which to combat the Angels, the Evangelion series. They are biomechanical, synthetic life forms that even I, the Captain of NERV's Japan branch, do not know much about. They are mankind's last hope and the only weapon which has any hope of harming the kin of Adam. However, they are dangerously unstable, many lives were lost in the experimentation on these beasts. The only people capable of piloting them are children, all born right after the Second Impact occured.

MISATO (V.O.)
In 2025, nearly 15 years to the day since the Second Impact occurred, we began to breathe a sigh of relief. We believed that perhaps the Angels would not come after all. We were dead wrong. Now the fate of the world rests
