More on the subject of artistic integrity.
Normally, I don’t respond to emails on the main page of the site, but I received an email today pertaining to my previous post that I felt compelled to display and reply to in public.

Subject: gunshotYou must be out of your mind. Maybe an overexposure to art has disturbed your thinking pattern or something. I will agree that english dub anime does have some problems and screw ups but this is not one of them. The sound of the gunshot is an exellent transition as it informs the audience of what has happened to Kaji. On the other hand hearing Asuka and Shinji’s conversation after the weird slapping noise leaves the audience confused and thinking “what…he’s dead? wha was he slapped to death? ect…”. But here is my main problem. You speak as if NG and other anime are just for you art appreciating freaks. NOT TRUE. Anime is now popular world wide. Why you ask? because it has been adapted to western culture, Into something the average joe can begin to understand. not everyone who watches anime does so for its artisticness. Here is the point: if hardy anyone understands it then almost no one will buy or be bothered with it at all. Amanda and the rest of the production team did a fantastic job. I would love to see you do what they did and still collect a legion of loyal english speaking fans. One final thing…If you dont like it just dont watch it. you dont have to bitch about the entertainment these people are giving you (for free i might add)
Reader, thank you for imparting such a vast amount of intellect and wisdom unto my inbox. I cannot conceive how I could possibly find fault with Amanda Winn Lee for not understanding the intellectual and creative scope of Hideaki Anno’s editing of Death. Shame on Hideaki Anno for trying to confuse and confuddle us simple minded westerners. Praise be to our beautiful and powerful Amanda Winn Lee, who shall smite all of Japan’s edgy creators and directors, and force them to produce anime for us that is perfectly cohesive and understandable, without stimulating the slightest bit of introspection or thought whatsoever.
Oh by the way, that’s commonly known as sarcasm.
Reader, obviously you completely missed the point of the previous news post. Amanda Winn Lee and company, like yourself, are completely incapable of understanding that a slap sounds absolutely nothing like a gunshot. You obviously missed the fact that this film has not only been adapted to a different language, but has also been changed from what it was intended to be. No, I don’t watch dubs, but I have the right to bitch about them, because they feed the ignorant and stupid “otaku” of the anime fandom. The sort of people who gobble pocky at an anime convention whilst yelling “KAWAII!!!” at the top of their lungs, as they faint and fall down an escalator from dehydration and hunger because they spent all their money on Naruto merchandise rather than food and water. Do yourself a favor, stop watching dubs, and stop worshiping people who maim and defile the work of others because they’re ignorant and think they know what’s best.
You’d like to see me try and do better? I know I could do a better job than them, but I wouldn’t dare to try and take their job. They make just slightly more than fast food employees. Sure, they have more fun, but I plan to retire before I’m DEAD.
Reader, good luck in your adventures, wandering the lands of anime fans, berating anyone who tries to take things seriously, as you proclaim the awe inspiring awesomeness that is DRAGON BALL Z.
(p.s. I am a prick. Deal with it. Better yet, go post about it in the forums, I could use someone to argue with.)
