Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse now in stores

By The Eva Monkey on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

While it may have been vastly overshadowed by the release of Halo: Reach, the first volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse was also released today, and can be purchased from a multitude of online vendors, as well as your preferred brick-and-mortar book store.  I found mine in stock at Barnes & Noble in the very touristy Baltimore Inner Harbor with the greatest of ease.  If you’re unfamiliar with this quirky four-volume series, check out the Eva Geeks wiki entry for Campus Apocalypse.  Also, please take special note of the closing contents of the volume, as our good friend Carl Horn is once again including Misato’s Fan Service Center, which you can write to at evangelion@darkhorse.com.

“A Thousand Angels” by Rachel Macwhirter

By The Eva Monkey on Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Rachel MacwhirterI like seeing people inspired by works like Evangelion. I also like to see what comes from that inspiration. Usually it’s things like art, fiction, cosplay, music videos, and occasionally parodies. But I think original music inspired by creative works is horribly lacking, so I like to see when someone writes a song inspired by Evangelion. Sometimes I stumble upon these things, sometimes someone points it out to me, but what I love most, is when someone over at Eva Geeks goes and says “So uh, I went and wrote a song based on Evangelion”. I tend to take better notice when they’ve been around a bit, and actually take the time to become a peer, as is the case with Rachel Macwhirter, who turns out to be a pretty talented singer and songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. Even though she’s only sixteen, I think she’s a pretty strong talent, and I’ve enjoyed her music quite a bit. In the case of Evangelion, she has a song entitled A Thousand Angels, an angsty little piece that seems written primarily from Shinji’s perspective, as evidenced by lyrics like “I must not run”. But overall it’s a really nice piece that encapsulates the pressures of the responsibility of being an Eva pilot. If you like it, check out some of her other songs. I also really like her song “Hey Alice”, a dark little piece inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

Evangelion and Chiptune

By The Eva Monkey on Friday, August 27th, 2010

We Are (Not) Alone Album ArtChiptune Musician Bit Shifter sporting an Evangelion T-ShirtA number of months back, I was exposed to the Chiptune genre of music by way of Weezer: The 8-Bit Album, a collaborative, fan-produced tribute album featuring an array of Weezer tracks in the style of chiptune. I thought it was pretty awesome, and I listened to it quite a bit over the span of some months.  Meanwhile, I started watching Penny Arcade’s video series, which featured a lot of chiptune music as its soundtrack.  Gradually I started to explore the chiptune music scene, checking out the various artists, and generally enjoying it a lot.  And then I go back to Penny Arcade recently to see that they’ve added a whole documentary about chiptune music called Reformat the Planet. This gets really weird for me when I notice one of the featured artists, Bit Shifter, sporting an Evangelion T-Shirt in the first part of the documentary. It’s kind of weird, but awesome, and I dork out a bit to that connection to my fandom that I wasn’t even expecting.  But that little nerdgasm is nothing to what I discovered next.  We were discussing our favorite versions of Cruel Angel’s Thesis over at Eva Geeks, and I commented that I would dork out to a chiptune version, which several posts later dug up something very much along those lines.  Last year, some Japanese Evangelion fans put together a collaborative fan album entitled We Are (Not) Alone, which mixes together a diverse range of styles of music, including none other than chiptune.  Some of these tracks are pretty awesome, and it is definitely worth downloading and giving a whirl, if for no other reason than to hear the glorious nerdgasm finale that is an over-the-top chiptune rendition of Komm Susser Tod.   Definitely check that one out, you will not be disappointed.

Update:
I also found a cool cover of Cruel Angel’s Thesis over at 8bitcollective:

Funimation licenses Evangelion 2.22 for a 2011 release

By The Eva Monkey on Monday, August 2nd, 2010

So in case you haven’t heard on cooler sites like Eva Geeks and Anime News Network, Funimation has licensed Evangelion 2.22 for a 2011 release for theaters, as well as DVD and Blu-ray.

If for some reason you don’t want to wait another year, you can always get the Hong Kong Blu-ray, it’s a legitimate release with competent English subtitles.  You can find more information about this over at Eva Geeks.

Evangelion Nerv Bucket

By The Eva Monkey on Monday, June 14th, 2010

Evangelion Nerv BucketI’m fairly certain, on the order of 90-99%, that if I don’t post this, I will hate myself for the rest of my life.  Something this ridiculous must be documented.  In the future we must be able to prove that it exists.

They made an Evangelion bucket.   An Evangelion bucket.

This is not a joke, this is an official product that you can find on the Evangelion Store.  It costs ¥4,980, holds 20 litres, and is made out of tin free steel.  So at the very least, you know they took the time to make it out of something worth a damn.  And here I thought it was just made out of shitty plastic.

Here’s some more pictures, some of which actually try to make it look useful, but make no mistake, it is still very silly:

Hellstorm Evangelion

By The Eva Monkey on Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Hellstorm EvangelionI’m sure everyone has had this experience at some point in their life, where you create something as a child or adolescent, and when you go back and look at it many years later, you ask yourself, “How can something that terrible exist?”.  Ten to fifteen years ago, those sorts of things were relegated to folders and composition notebooks tucked away beneath beds or in the back of a closet somewhere.  But now, with the internet, those sorts of things aren’t a private thing anymore, they exist for all sorts of ridicule.  Sometimes its funny, and sometimes, as is the case with Hellstorm Evangelion, it’s hilarious.

Hellstorm Evangelion is a fan fic authored by Issei Mataloun, which has largely been lost to the sands of time.  But its memory lives on, with an entry on TV Tropes, a textual MSTing by Elmer Studios in the late 90s, and an audio book by Heavens Feel Press which is absolutely hilarious.  I don’t think it’s until you’ve taken the story and given it a dramatic read that you truly appreciate how incredibly terrible and, like many cult films, how absolutely hysterical and awesome it is with the right mindset.  And would you believe there’s more?  There’s also Issei Strikes Back and Hellstorm II.  I highly recommend checking out the Hellstorm Evangelion audio book, it’s about an hour, and it’s pretty awesome.

Mistakes of Youth Podcast, featuring Evangelion 2.22

By The Eva Monkey on Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Mistakes of Youth Podcast, featuring Evangelion 2.22The other day, I sat down with my good friend wildarmsheero, as well as some dude named “boner town”, and talked about Evangelion 2.22.  Hopefully you’ve seen it by now, and would enjoy listening to us ramble about it a bit.   And by a bit, I mean like two hours.  The podcast is conveniently divided up into an initial spoiler-light half, followed by a fairly spoiler-heavy second half.  And as I mention in the podcast, this is the third time we’ve discussed the new Evangelion movies on Mistakes of Youth, you can find the previous entries in the great saga archived in the podcasts section.

Evangelion 2.22 BluRay and DVD rips and fansubs

By The Eva Monkey on Monday, June 7th, 2010

Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) AdvanceHey kids, in case you haven’t heard, Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance was recently released on DVD and Blu-ray in Japan. It has yet to be licensed for distribution in English, however there are now numerous rips and fansubs floating around for you to find, download, and enjoy. If you prefer subtitles, and are anxious to get an actual, honest to goodness Blu-ray disc of this film, you do have an alternative to waiting for a western release. There will be an official Hong Kong release of Evangelion 2.22 later this month, which will have English subtitles, and will be in Region A. It might cost you more, but at least you won’t have to wait another year to have the film on your shelf. I’m considering it getting it myself.

Manga no longer has movie licenses.

By The Eva Monkey on Thursday, November 19th, 2009

It’s been an assumption for a while, given that DVDs for Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion have been out of print for some time now, but it’s finally official, according to Steve Sargent of Manga Entertainment on the Anime News Network podcast, Manga no longer has the licenses for the Evangelion movies. This is good news for Evangelion fans, as it means that the licenses will transfer to a new company, who will hopefully put out a superior anamorphic DVD that Manga promised back in the Summer of 2006. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get a Blu-ray, or the real Rebirth!
