This is something that has been mentioned in the past, but I was watching the Hamstergeddon episode the other night, and felt the compulsion to rip the footage and make a side by comparison. Weird right? Of all the things to post about, I chose something completely random. I’ll get around to posting something of importance eventually. Stay tuned.
The board is having some trouble. I’ve relocated the directory in order to work on it when it comes back online. I’m also investigating whether or not this is a technical problem or something more serious, like a denial of service attack. Please be patient, I’ll try to have it back online as soon as possible.
As glorious as the cheesy cellphone video was, no words can describe the sheer excitement I now have for Rebuild of Evangelion. Seeing it in motion has quelled many of my anxieties that I previously held for the films. I can only hope that the improvements in the story are as profound as the improvements in the visuals.
The phrase “No comment” doesn’t even begin to convey how utterly beyond words I am right now. If commentary were like temperature, “No comment” would be down around zero degrees, speechless would be negative degrees, and the way I feel right now would be somewhere down around absolute zero. Just… wow. Evangelion Doritos. That’s a product placement I don’t think anyone was expecting.
The trailer for Rebuild of Evangelion 0:1 “You are (not) alone” was shown a few times in Japanese theaters recently, and fortunately for us gaijin, someone was good enough to do a dirty little video recording of the trailer, which subsequently found its way onto YouTube. It looks very much like a version of Eva had it been made today rather than in 1995. The characters are all there, the first three angels are all there, and the plot looks spot on the original. The only major difference I can tell is that it looks absolutely gorgeous, and there’s something about LCL being black rather than orange. Lilith = Black Moon = Black LCL. Makes sense, but as has been asked in discussion, “If the LCL is black… how will the pilots see?”. Time will tell, and in the meantime, we can drool, and anxiously await the september 1st release, and ravenously devour every piece of promotional material that comes our way.
I was poking around the internet last night, entering into Google various terms like evangelion, article, interview, and hideaki anno. And usually, given enough time between Google searches, something interesting is bound to show up. Last night was no exception, as I came across an article about anonymous group suicide in Japan entitled “Let’s Die Together” by upcoming writer David Samuels. I found the subject of the article itself an interesting read, but that in and of itself is not why I read the lengthy editorial. Midway through the article, Samuels interviews none other than Hideaki Anno, who provides commentary on Evangelion and today’s Japanese society. The article doesn’t explicitly blame Evangelion for the rise of anonymous group suicide, but does use it as an iconic example of what has led Japan to become what Anno describes as “a country of children”. There are a number of interesting thoughts, comments, and realizations about Japan and otaku culture that I feel many fans of Japanese pop culture would find of interest, depressing as it may be. The article has sparked commentary from a number of other bloggers on the net, through whom I discovered Samuels’ article.
I know you’re probably thinking, “What’s going on?”, and let me assure you, everything is just fine and dandy. But it’s probably a good idea to lay a few things out for regular visitors and forum members. First of all, I’m not happy with the present condition of the site, and even less happy with how I’ve shelved the site due to college over the past few years. You may have heard that I’ve recently graduated from the Visual Arts program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. And while I’m in that awkward transition between school and the real world, school was the reason why I neglected a number of my interests, hobbies, and personal pursuits. And as school is finished for me (for the time being), I have no excuse not to pick things back up again. A few entries back, I wrote about the mention that this site had in the supplementary article in volume 10 of the Evangelion manga. And to be perfectly honest, part of me doesn’t feel like the site deserved that mention. I’ve been somewhat of an absent webmaster, and an absent forum administrator. That being said, I intend to systematically go through the site, throwing out certain content that is inconsistant, incomplete, or just plain absent. I’m also intending to integrate a few new features, a new design, and new content which I’ve collected. In short, everything has been taken down for the time being, but content will resurface periodically as I review, revise, or repurpose it. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions for the future of this site, feel free to email me at theevamonkey@evamonkey.com, or to PM me on the forum, which is always available to you.
And if you have any trouble registering, please send me an email, we’ve had to respond to the problem with spambots by turning account activation to admin only. It makes it easier for us if you mention Evangelion in your interests so that we know you’re not a spambot.
Word is out that Kadokawa has published volume 11 of the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga, as well as volume 3 of the Shinji Ikari Ikusei Keikaku manga. You can import either of these titles, or you can read the translations or scanlations available here on the site. And for those of you who don’t obsessively collect manga in a language you don’t understand, you might be interested to know that Angelic Days volume 5 is out a little earlier than I previously reported. And finally, AT-Translations has released stage 5 of the Ikari Shinji Ikusei Keikaku manga. You can download it via their downloads page. Happy reading!
AT-Translations has put up a poll on their web forum regarding what they should work on over the summer. If you’re like me, and have a severe need for new Evangelion manga, I suggest you go over there, register at their forums, and vote for Ikari Shinji Ikusei Keikaku in the appropriate topic. True, the vote will obviously be skewed, but at least they’ll know that there’s still interest in the title. And for those of you who are unfamiliar with the title, I’ve got a nice little archive on the site, which includes some scanlations, as well as raws of the manga up to the current stage.
