Matt Greenfield at Tekkoshocon

By The Eva Monkey on Friday, April 28th, 2006

I watched this video of a panel from Tekkoshocon, and I’m surprised to say that the word on the Live Action Evangelion Project seems pretty good. I’ve had severe hesitations, and have on more than one occasion acted as a sort of harbinger of doom in regards to the project, convinced that there is no way in hell that the project would amount in anything of significance or worth. Based upon some of what is being said by Greenfield, I’m starting to think differently. His statements about how the project is currently progressing are actually quite impressive, and make me somewhat at ease to know that at the very least, some amazing talent will go into realizing this project. I’m still skeptical as to whether or not the production can or will capture the same essence of what Anno expressed through Evangelion a decade ago. Nevertheless, it seems like something to keep an eye on in the coming months more than ever, as Greenfield ultimately states that a director will most likely be signed on by the end of the year. Very exciting times appear to be ahead in the Live Action Evangelion Project.

Here are some notes in brief from the panel in regards to the project:

  • Matt Greenfield says that Weta approached ADV about approaching Gainax to do a live action Eva movie.
  • Three “A List” directors that are also fans of Evangelion approached ADV about the project, not the other way around.
  • Greenfield talks about getting their pitch package together and that “the first thing is Robin Williams talking about Evangelion”, who is apparently a big Evangelion fan, and the appearance of the Mass Production Eva toy in One Hour Photo is entirely his doing.
  • Celebrities have been inquiring directly to ADV about being involved in Live Action Evangelion.
  • The director to be signed will most likely be the first to have room in their schedule.
  • Greenfield acknowledges the uncertainty of the final product due to the nature of film making being driven by the director.
  • The slug script was written by a well known writer who has written several well known sci-fi movies. The slug script will be re-written to fit the tastes and vision of the director selected.
  • Greenfield acknowledges that the children will most likely be age appropriate. The kids will be picked and then the adults will be cast to work well with the children.
  • Tiffany Grant asserts that Weta gets 20 times more email about Evangelion than Lord of the Rings.
  • Greenfield says a director will most likely be signed by the end of the year.
  • Greenfiled says they don’t want to make it for profit, but because they want to do it, and they want to do it right, and do it justice in the same way that Lord of the Rings did.

Donations

By The Eva Monkey on Monday, April 17th, 2006

I wanted to take some time to make an update on the forum transfer. I’ve received thirteen donations for a total of about $60 after processing deductions. This has me well on my way to bringing the forums back on a new host. Thanks go out to Jeff B, Michael H, Benton H, Garrat C, Joshua L, Dustin L, Maria D, Haw L, Paul H, SE P, Jeff H, Ronaldo J, and Justin B. I’ll be hooking you all up with a donation gift of some sort in the near future. It may not be that spectacularly awesome, but it will be something. That should be along in time. And I’ll be sure to give you guys some perks on the forums when they come back.

Denied

By The Eva Monkey on Thursday, April 13th, 2006

Every year UMBC awards approximately $50,000 to undergraduate students to pursue self-directed research in an area of their choosing, from sciences like Biology, to arts like Dance. Given my desire to write a book on Evangelion as a sort of capstone to my journey and devotion to the show over the past six years, I decided to apply for one of these awards. Sadly, I did not win an award, and moreover, this was my last opportunity. I almost did not want to apply, aware of the obvious outcome, that due to grades and an interest in writing about “Japanese cartoons” that I had little chance of being awarded with anything. The $1,500 would have helped quite a bit, giving me funds to be able to have translation work done. Even though I knew it would turn out like this, I had a desperate hope that I had a shot. I’m very dissapointed, and uncertain how to proceed from here, but I refuse to back down from my aspirations over the past years.

Ikari Shinji Ikusei Keikaku Manga Alive and Well

By The Eva Monkey on Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

It would appear that the Shinji Ikari Raising Project manga which I posted about sometime last year is still in production and had its first volume published by Kadokawa Comics on the 25th of March. Scans of the volume were made available and have been archived along with the two stages that have been translated by AT Translations, and some additional stage scans and some magazine cover scans. It might not be along the lines of the official Evangelion manga by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, but it might still tide you over until the commercial version of volume 10 is available in English. The Shinji Ikari Raising Project manga is authored Osamu Tahashi, and is very similar in feel to the Girlfriend of Steel 2 manga authored by Fumino Hayashi, so if you’ve read a bit of that and found it enjoyable, then give the Shinji Ikari Raisin Project manga a read. It might not become commercially available, so you should read it while you have the opportunity, and possibly give it some buzz and consideration for distribution in English.

Also, I have received two donations towards the forum transfer, so I want to thank those people for their help, and say that it is a good start. I’m going to try my best to bring you guys some new content in the coming weeks, and try and get some serious work on Eva Monkey done, and make it worthy of people’s donations. And I as I said, there will be definite perks for those that make donations. I won’t say what, but it will be worth the donation.

State of the Forums

By The Eva Monkey on Thursday, March 30th, 2006

Seeing as how I’m asked about the forums on a nearly daily basis, a status update is probably in order. The forums are back, but are not fully functional. In order to get the forums fixed, I would need to shell out $50 to my host to get them to do something I should be able to do myself. Until now, I’ve not had qualms with my host, but it’s been suggested to me that it’s time I found a new host. My hosting agreement pays in advance all the way up untill next January, so I’ll have to shell out some extra money on web hosting to get the forums running again. Once I have another account with a better host, I can relocate the forums, and eventually transfer there in full. Or I could transfer the forums and .com domain and use the current server as auxiliary space.

So here’s what I’m thinking. I’m not exactly broke, but I am strapped for cash. Slapping down about $100 for a new webhost isn’t something I can do right now. Eva Monkey receives over 11,000 unique visits each month, and we need to forums back, it is an integral part of this site, and I would argue is an important part of the English speaking Evangelion fan circle as well. So here’s what I’m requesting of you loyal and supportive forum members. If you want to see the forums back as soon as possible, please donate $5. For five dollars, you can sponsor this site and community. Divided up amongst a bunch of people, its quite easy.

I can’t offer much in return. I can load up the server with a bunch of Eva junk and let you go wild. I can migrate the entire site to a new account and donators have access to the old server to us for image hosting until the service expires next january. Hell, I could even put some super secret stuff up for download just for donators. You never know. So please, help a Monkey out and give to the fix the forum fund?

Evangelion Doujinshi Fighter Found!

By The Eva Monkey on Sunday, March 26th, 2006

Thanks go out to kinglear for providing an archive of the Evangelion doujinshi fighting game that was sought after for a number of months back. I’ve installed it and can verify that it does indeed work, but I cannot verify the integrity of the package at all. Install and run it at your own risk. For the game and instructions on how to install and run it, please click on the link below.

Forum back… kind of.

By The Eva Monkey on Saturday, March 18th, 2006

Well, after about three weeks, I finally got the forums restored. Only there’s a problem with the database, and no one is able to log in, not even me. And to make matters worse, the database is hidden away from phpmyadmin, so I can’t fix it manually through that. I swear, I will have the forum back, without starting from scratch.

Undergraduate Research

By The Eva Monkey on Monday, March 6th, 2006

Today I turned in my application to UMBC’s undergraduate research program. Every year, the school grants a handful of students with a grant of upwards of $1500 to pursue research on a subject of their choosing. Recently, it’s starting to get competitive, with not everyone who applies receiving funding, and not everyone who wins getting the maximum or desired amount. Given that I’m interested in researching a subject not characteristically associated with academia, I remain skeptical about my likelihood of winning funding. But then again, I have a topic I’ve put a great degree of time and effort into structuring prior to applying, and that might translate into a greater likelihood of being seen as potentially successful by the review committee. I have no doubts that my research will go somewhere, it’s just that I need money for translation work so that I can uncover some new insights. Hopefully this time next month when the committee convenes, they’ll look favorably on what I want to do, and give me something to start from. But until that time, I doubt I’ll be getting much sleep.

Evangelion Sheet Music Evangelion Sheet Music

I’m fairly sure there are some people out there that have an immense love of both Evangelion and music, and some of you may be inclined enough to rock out to Cruel Angel’s Thesis on a piano. So if the thought of playing some Eva music on your instrument of choice has ever occured to you, you now have quite a few sheets of Eva music at your immediate disposal. Enjoy.

Forums Back Soon

By The Eva Monkey on Thursday, March 2nd, 2006

It took some effort, but the forums will DEFINITELY be back within the next 24-48 hours. You do not need to re-register, the forums will be back in more or less their former state. You might need to re-upload your avatar, and the forum skin might not look the same, but all the posts and forum information will be identical to the way it was prior to the crash. Check back in a day or two, and we’ll have a good laugh about it.

In the meantime, I suggest you go over to fanfiction.net, and report PhilipCult for ripping off the Eva Talent Show thread.
