ICv2 posted some news concerning the 10th Anniversary Edition of Evangelion being released by ADV this August. Here’s the short of it. This is a limited edition set, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. It will not be $250 as previously stated, it will in fact be $300. The jacket which I presumed was just a sleeve for the box is in fact an actual wearable jacket that you will mail away a card for with your size information. The box is said to include every Evangelion video extra ever made.
Now, I’m skeptical. When I hear something like this, I presume that it will include all that stuff from the Renewal set, such as the Alternate Live Action Sequence, Genesis 0:0, and so on and so forth, and with translation to top it all off. But, that’s in a perfect world. And in the world I live in, that means a lot more self important ADV nonsense. I don’t care to sit through another poorly executed special like The Mythology of Evangelion. Nor do I care to hear more about Tiffany Grant’s perverse love of her anime alter-ego. I really don’t. I’ve had enough of that, and I know I’m not alone on this one. The Evangelion fan community deserves something to make up for ADV Films bleeding it of every spare penny. As a dedicated Evangelion fan and collector, I know I can’t afford this, but that doesn’t change the fact that I want to get this. I just don’t want to pay for it. Because I know, as soon as the set comes out, the video extras will get ripped by someone and be put up online. If I’m lucky, I’ll remain broke for the next few months so that it will be completely infeasible for me to purchase this set.

Wow. Here I thought I was all on top of Evangelion fandom and I come to find that the first volume of Angelic Days (aka Iron Maiden 2nd aka Girlfriend of Steel 2) has been available for the last month! The first volume was published May 5th through ADV Manga, and should be in stores near you. Volume 2 is slated to be released August 25th, and volume 3 is slated to be released November 25th, according to Amazon. While you may have a number of months to go before volume 10 of the official Eva manga makes its way into your grubby little hands, you can go out and pick this up to tide you over. Sure, it may be fluff, and not as epic as Anno’s beloved canon, but it just might be able to satiate your desire for more Evanglion. So go on, buy, you are but a mere cog in the machine of consumerism, and don’t you deny it.

Aparently Gainax is releasing some sort of super duper tell all Evangelion serial publication called “Evangelion Chronicle”. They will be releasing a new issue on the first and fifteenth of every month for a total of 30 issues, 960 pages total, and 690 yen per issue. While I’m skeptical as to how much earth shattering information will be included, it does sound very interesting and promising. Unfortunately, it’s in Japan-speak. I’m half tempted to organize a campaign to get this thing published in English through ADV or Viz. Because I know that this thing would sell well in English, it’s just a matter of expressing interest, because as anyone knows, Gainax likes to milk money out of Eva, and if they think they milk a little more, I’m sure they will.

I am now the proud owner of a brand new Toshiba Satelite laptop. I got a pretty good price for it off of Best Buy’s site, and so far, I’m pleased. I just have to get everything back up and running. Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Paint Shop, Winamp, BSplayer, Divx, Xvid, Media Player Classic, and all those other programs I just can’t live without. Once that’s all done, and I’m content with the configuration and state of my new lappy, I can get some work done on this website. I just have to get used to the new keyboard, because even though the tab key is in the same location, my brain wants to believe that it’s further over, since this laptop is a widesceen model and all of the keys are shifted slightly to the right. I miss my pointing stick on my old laptop already. I really want to know who thought that touch pads should be on every laptop in existence, because I really do think that the elusive pointing stick is vastly superior. My old laptop had one, and it was much better than a touchpad or a trackball. Not as good as an optical mouse, but pretty good for a built in pointing device. I think they should manufacture more laptops with the pointing stick. In the end, it just means I’ll be using my mouse a lot more than before.

First of all, I want to know who else on this planet besides my father uses a trackball mouse. There must be enough of them out there, otherwise they wouldn’t make them. Drives me nuts. Imprecise, gives me a cramp. And the trackball mouse is just starters. He’s also got his security so high that it prevents you from actually doing anything productive. It’s currently running Windows XP, and should either be reformatted or downgraded to something a little less beefy like 2000 Professional. And then there’s the graphical settings, such as large icons and huge font. He literally has every program icon on his desktop. He never figured out how to use the taskbar’s quicklaunch, and whenever I try to get him to use it, he has a conniption. His desktop frightens me.
I need a new computer. Badly. I need to be able to work on this site with ease again.

I may at some point have mentioned that I haven’t had a proper summer vacation for some time now. I don’t think I need to tell you that college absorbs free time the way a sponge absorbs water, blood, urine, or any combination of the three. Today marked the last leg of the academic side of the semester. I finished off classes today and am now free from the hardship and oppression of academia. I still need to finish moving out of my dorm, take care of a few loose ends, and swing by graduation. Aside from that, it’s over. And that means one thing. Free time for this website. I haven’t really worked on it for quite some time, and I cringe at the various states of disrepair that the site is in. I think I’ll systematically go through the entire site and revise the content, and then reintegrate everything into a consistent format. At some point, I’ll relocate and restore the forums. And yes, it is silly that I’ve not gotten the forums back up since the crash in late February. Just hope that I find a sexy new laptop sooner rather than later. Better yet, help me out. I’m looking for a new laptop (Toshiba preferably) under $1000 (on sale or with rebate), minimum 1 ghz processing speed, minimum 256 meg memory, and minimum 40 gig hd. If you’ve got free time and are a major computer nerd who’s always on the prowl for a deal and you see something, shoot me an email. The sooner I get a new lappy, the sooner you get lots of a cool Eva geekery.

There have been numerous releases of Evangelion over the years, and almost all of the releases outside of Japan have boasted very poor extras. While it is not necessary, the rise of DVD culture practically mandates that distributors do everything they can to give you your money’s worth. Companies such as ADV Films and Manga Entertainment have produced minimal, almost insultingly unsubstinate extras that many within the fanbase brush off as being non-existant or merely pointless fluff.
Fortunately, over the years a number of fans have scoured for Japan-only extras, produced wonderful music videos and parodies, and now you can have them on your shelf, thanks to BrikHaus of Sand Camel Productions, who has put together a DVD of extras entitled Evangelion: Instrumental Extras. This fan produced DVD contains various interviews, commercials, music videos, parodies, and other features complete with menus, and snazzy cover art. You can get the files via bittorrent, burn them to a DVD, and voila. You can read up about the production of this DVD at the Sand Camel Productions blog.
Largely, this DVD contains a lot of videos you might have already seen before. Some might be new to you. Whatever the case, it is definitely worth a look, and might just deserve a spot on your shelf along with the rest of your Eva DVDs.

No, this is not a Japanese release. This is yet another release of Evangelion on DVD by ADV Films. This thing is supposedly limited edition and full of extras. And if the extras on Platinum are any indication, you will not be buying this set for the extras. You will be buying this because it’s Evangelion, and because it’s limited edition. It comes out August 22nd, and will cost you $250 and another small portion of your soul. It’s cruel, there is just always a newer and shinier release of Evangelion “Coming Soon”. And for the record, ADV Films explicitly told fans that Platinum would be their last release of Evangelion on DVD. Then they put out the Platinum thinpak, and now they’re putting out this 10th anniversary set, and you just know that they’ll slap Evangelion on either HD-DVD or Blu-ray when the next format rolls around. Good grief. Sadly, there is no doubt that these sets will sell. I’m just kicking myself because I should pick one up, but I know now that I haven’t got the money for it.

You might have already heard, but Mainichi did a very nice feature on Evangelion’s tenth anniversary, included are a few articles from a more Japanese perspective, containing some interesting information from “outside the bubble” so to speak. They are definitely worth the time read, so please do so. The episode synopses might be a bit redundant to most, but the three articles are certainly interesting.
Evangelion Special: For producer Otsuki, success not always a bed of roses

I knocked my Maglite flashlight off of my desk shelf and it landed on my laptop, annihilating my computer’s hard drive. So to all you people out there, don’t be stupid like me, don’t ever put a heavy object where it can fall onto and destory a part of your very being.
It’s very strange, for about two or three hours after my computer died, I didn’t know what to do with myself. It was as if part of my soul had been violently ripped from me. Like I was incomplete. I completely lost track of time. I couldn’t go online. I couldn’t check my email. I couldn’t post on forums. I was very sad.
I’ve had this Toshiba Laptop for almost five years. I got it the summer after I graduated from high school. It’s been through so much over the years. I can’t tell you how much this laptop had become entwined into the very fabric of my being. With its destruction, it’s as if it’s the end of an era in my life. I wish I could put some money into getting it back in working order, but it would be too costly. I’m thinking of replacing it with a more current model of Toshiba Satelite. It did me pretty good. Five years is pretty exceptional, especially considering the hell I put it through. I just gotta figure out how I’m going to afford to purchase a new laptop…
Ok, so I lied, this post does have to do with Evangelion, in that I was getting back into Evangelion fandom, and was putting together some new stuff for the site, and just lost the work, and the means to work further on the site. As a college student, I have plenty of computer access, but just not the personal kind where I can multi-task from application to application doing all of the tasks I could conceivably perform in just the manner I would like. So, I don’t know how much I can do on this damned site until I get a new computer. And I was getting pretty close to transferring the forums too. Well isn’t that ironic?
