Evangelion News
The first volume of the Director’s Cut Episodes, “Resurrection” is out. The product and episodes are good, and I would recommend buying a copy if you are a big Eva fan. And if you come here often, then you must be.
On the DVD is a feature with Richard Taylor and Ben Wootten. Taylor is the head of WETA, and Wootten is heading up the pre-production process, so they would be the ones aside from Matt Greenfield to speak about the project. Yet despite the interview’s great length and great number of images, I felt somewhat unsatisfied by the interview. It was essentially just another piece of hype. All I gleaned from the interview was that
- The partnership began through some mutual acquaintances of WETA and ADV.
- WETA is only doing pre-production concept work, and not the movie’s production process, as Taylor stated that he would be very pleased if they got the opportunity to work on the films.
Live Action Cutie Honey
Lastly, Hideaki Anno fans should look into the Cutey Honey live action movie, which is the latest film he has directed. Check out the official site for trailers and other info.

Eva Monkey Updates
I have a rather significant set of announcements this week. First of all, I am pleased to announce that I am now affiliated with eva.trivialbeing.net, a rather prominent site dedicated to the Live Action Evangelion Project. There you will find news as it breaks. Check it out, the site has all of the pre-production coverage and images, along with commentary and open forum discussion.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Live Action Movie
Also, I would like to announce in advance that EvaMonkey.com is nearing its one year anniversary, and with that comes a long deserved new layout. The site might be a little inconsistent as I convert the content over to the new format, but believe me, its well worth it. I am quite pleased with the new layout, and I’m sure many of you will be as well.
I’m sure you’ve undoubtedly seen all the new concepts, but in case you haven’t here they are, they are high quality, no watermarking, and minimal editing. Feel free to use them at you discretion, a thank you is much appreciated, just don’t remote link and I’ll be happy. Some are just raw captures because I didn’t have the time to crop them all. But I should get to the rest in time.

If you haven’t noticed the new link at the bottom of the Beyond Eva section of the navbar, then be sure to check out the new section devoted to Evangelion Anime Music Videos, where I will submit myself to the discomfort of watching terrible AMVs so you won’t have to. Be sure to read the new essay in the Written Statements section entitled “A theory of creation, existence, and destruction as interpreted from Shin Seiki Evangelion”. And finally, though it is not part of this site’s content I would like to relay you to this rather lengthy article on Anime News Network entitled “Understanding Evangelion” that aptly dissects the phenomenon that is Evangelion, which I enjoyed reading.

Evangelion News

On Tuesday January 13th, Evangelion Resurrection is released, it contains the original and director’s cuts versions of episodes 21-23. Go to Best Buy has it decently priced at $19.99, however I would suggest checking if your local Best Buy has copies in stock before going out, as some aren’t so good about stocking anime. This DVD should be of interest to some, as there is some new info about the Live Action Eva movie on the DVD.
You may all be familiar with the Rei and Asuka games in the tradition of Princess Maker (the sim games where you raise them as a daughter). Well, now you can raise your very own Shinji Ikari. Release date, game info and what not are forth coming, but it was announced recently on Gainax’s website.
Also, there is an issue of Newtype out now that features Evangelion 2, for PS2. It is supposed to have lots of info, as it appears to be the issue’s feature, but in reality the feature is merely a broad documentation of all the Eva stuff out there. Its basically one big advertisement. It was rather disappointing, and I want my money back. If you’re going to buy this magazine purely for the Eva content…. DON’T. Find someone who has it, and borrow it. Don’t waste your money on the ultimate beginner’s guide to Evangelion.
Eva Monkey Updates
Lets get this week’s updated content out of the way so we can get to the more interesting stuff. The LPs section has been updated, I have album covers, both front and back, and track listings for a number of Evangelion albums. So if you’re looking to buy an Evangelion album for a particular track, you can check the track listings here. I also updated the omake section and put up a gallery of images of UFO Catcher Toys. And last, but certainly not least, I have a report written by Pan-Chan of Lelola.net entitled “Life is an Unfamiliar Ceiling: A look at director Hideaki Anno”.
I also have some pictures that you might be interested in.
Much deserved Plug
Also, I would like to promote a piece of fan fiction that I found to be quite good. And I mean that, as I typically avoid fan fiction like the plague. No offense to any of the fanfiction enthusiasts out there. But Xanatose wrote a short story following the events of Episode 24 that I found quite intriguing. I found that his Shinji was a bit uncharacteristic of the Shinji in the series, but that was the purpose. It was executed quite well and was an enjoyable read. I suggest that if you have about ten free minutes that you once over it.

I really ought to stop updating so much. Its probably unnecessary to document day by day what I do on Eva Monkey. So here’s what I’m thinking, I’m gonna start updating each Monday, with a whole bunch of stuff at once, rather than a whole bunch of little things. And since its Monday, I might as well do my first weekly update.
Hey, you know what I love? When people sign my guestbook. Really. It makes my day. Hint Hint.
I posted this picture of Eva Unit 1 fighting Wing Zero other day, and I was reminded of this other image I found at some point. Its a height comparison of various mecha, and if you ever wanted to know just how tall an Eva is, just look for yourself.
Also, I’ve got Asuka and Eva Unit 2’s info up in the Bios section.
And finally, I found that someone used Eva Monkey as a citation for an essay, which I found quite interesting. Its about Anno, and is fairly informative, and sums up about everything you should know about Anno. Take a look, I recommend it.

Say… did you know that Eva pilots have midichlorians? Really, they do. Apparently a keen observance of the force can allow you to pilot giant robots. Shame they didn’t have Evas in Star Wars… that would have been awesome. What am I rambling about? Click the link below and find out for yourself.
Also, I’ve got Rei Ayanami’s profile up, as well as profiles for Megumi Hayashibara and Kotono Mitsuishi from Anime Academy.
And finally I have a an image from an issue of Anime Invasion where they pitted Wing Zero against Eva Unit 1. If the credits are correct, the image was done by Dreamwave productions.

Ok, the scan I previously posted was one of two concept images that ran in Anime Invasion/Anime Insider, or whatever that magazine is called these days. The other image is very similar to the other hanger image, only it features two Evas, one that looked like it was still in development, and another one that was half sized and in development as well. But more importantly was the content of the article that the images ran with.
The article surmises a bunch of questions interwoven with Matt Greenfield’s honeymoon. Don’t ask…. though they failed to mention that Tiffany Grant is his wife. At any rate, here are the important facts gleaned from the article for your convenience.
The movie has no director, the script was written in house by the ADV office as a springboard. They’re currently shopping around for a director with said script. If a director has expressed any interest in the project, Greenfield failed to mention. The script is in fact a retelling of the story. It is typical movie length and is only a part of the story. They are considering an episodic format, leaving plenty of room for sequels, but without making the first film dependent on the other films to finish it satisfactorily. Think Matrix vs Reloaded & Revolutions. Aside from that, the script is only an idea, and Greenfield stated that it was just a building block, and the film could be completely different, allowing the director to roam creatively. He made a comparison with WETA. He said that they are where Peter Jackson was seven years ago with the Lord of the Rings, and it is possible that we may see the movie in a couple years, or not till 2010. He was realistic, and admitted that it was possible that the film would never see a release, as it really is just an ambition at this point, and ambition isn’t necessarily everything.

I’ve been working rather hard on the site over the last couple days, putting up components for the Manga Section, which I really want to get off the ground more than anything. Its been hard working on that section, especially since I don’t have the actual physical volumes in front of me to work with, as I left them at college. Ugh. Oh well, I’ve done what I can, and I’ll be able to finish the rest up next week when I go back to school.
I’m mainly getting fed up with people criticizing me for plugging a website that doesn’t have as much content as it should. It’s hard, ya know? I only have so much free time to go around, I don’t get anything but satisfaction for what I do here. Don’t tell me I don’t do enough, ever. Keep it to yourself. Enough, end rant.
I put up a bunch of pages to start off the Manga Section and the Angels section of the Glossary. Its not much, but its a framework. I did type up some stuff about Eva Unit 02, and updated pages here and there, mostly minor stuff.
One interesting thing thing I have found is a concept piece that apparently is in Anime Invasion this issue. I dunno, as I haven’t seen it myself, just found the scan in a mailing list, and decided to past it. I look at it, and I fail to be impressed. I am reminded of this very shibby piece of art by someone by the name of McGibs…. who’s something like 17 or 18. They ought to hire him down at WETA.

I came across this really random spoof poster someone made for the Live Action Evangelion movie… and not even a very good one at that. It has spelling errors and the quality is just terrible as it is. But… it could be seen as funny, amusing, and so forth, so I will offer it up for your amusement.

Updated Gendo’s character profile and the episode guide. I finished the first episode and am almost finished with the second episode. I also got Anime Academy’s profile of Hideaki Anno up.

I’ve neglected this site over the course of the last school semester, so I figured I’d try and make up for it by posting a bunch of stuff consistently over the holiday break. Today I have scans of a few statue advertisements. I picked these up a while back when I went to the Baltimore ComicCon with Silversword. That was something like three months ago. Better late than never I suppose.

Also, I thought I’d post some random images you may not have ever seen… or may not have ever wanted to see, they include fan art, official art, cosplay, etc. Some are not for the weak of heart…. you have been warned.

Something I should have posted awhile ago, is a zip file with a bunch of alternate intros for the anime “Child’s Toy” featuring characters from Eva instead of its own cast. Thanks go to Xanatose for submitting them to me. Also of interest, in the larger file, you can see a dancing Gendo cosplayer, and Gainax Studios appears to be one of the locales they shot the live action dancing at.

Also, I put together a preview a while back of some of the art in the Die Sterne book, and I don’t think I ever posted a link to it. Most of the book’s imagery can be found in one form or another thanks to image galleries…. but there is also some stuff that has been done recently, most of it quite good. It’s a great book, I highly recommend getting a copy. As an artbook, it’s top notch. And it’s a great collector’s item.
