In the past, there was a problem with a limit on SQL queries which killed the board periodically. There was also some problems with certain controls that are only related to administrative control. I had been planning a fresh install of the newest version of phpbb in hopes of alleviating or phasing out these issues entirely. So when tinkering with WordPress on my server, I was reviewing database control, and I noticed a diagnostic and repair feature. I ran a diagnostic on the forums to find quite a few problems with certain tables of the forum database. So I decided to give the automated repair function a try. Just before I did, it occured to me that I should probably do a full backup before hand. So I did, and then did some repairing. All looked good, the diagnostic showed green across the board (HA! PUNS!) and I took a look over at the board, and I think I even posted once or twice before wandering away from my computer. I returned to find an IM from DatDude informing me that the board had turned inside out. I went back in to run a diagnostic to find that somehow the table of the database containing all the sessions information was gone. Basically, the forum was dead, near as I could figure. And I was sure that wasn’t the only table missing. So I’ve got another fresh install of phpbb running in another directory, and I’m currently trying to restore the backup to the new install. The problem is that the forum backup is 130 megs. That’s pretty big. Pretty tedious to edit, and pretty tedious to restore. So I in short, the forum will be back as soon as I can get the database restored properly.

Eva Manga Volume 10 has been slated for release in Japan on March 25th. We could likely expect the English adaptation anywhere from 3-6 months afterward. Soon rather than later, hopefully.

…is a Hideaki Anno action figure. Behold! You can have your very own Hideaki Anno to pose and admire in all his articulated glory. This figure depicts the renowned director as Ultraman from Daicon Film’s 1983 production “The Return of Ultraman“. Never before has plastic been able to capture such amazingness as with this glorious action figure. You just might sell your soul and disown yourself for the opportunity to own this fine specimen of geekery. This limited edition figure is available from the Mediacom Toy Corporation.

I don’t like to ban people from the forums. I generally let people do what they want within reason. I don’t make people use kindergarten acceptable language, and I generally let people be themselves. It has worked fairly well so far, aside from a few isolated instances which have been dealt with It is not very often that we get someone who is quite literally “fucking nuts”.
That being said, the user “PhilipCult” has been banned. Most of his posts have been deleted, and many of the posts which acknowledged his existance have been deleted as well, leaving the forum relatively devoid of proof of his existance. However, if you have a bottle of aspirin, and care to see what sort of behavior will get you banned from a forum, you can read either this, or this.
From here on out, I expect all current and future forum members to use proper english, grammar, punctuation, and to not be completely “fucking nuts”. I don’t care to go through and read this sort of nonsense. And I’m sorry to anybody who was bothered or offended by PhilipCult. Thank you to Titus, Defectron, and SEELE 08 for bringing this to my attention.

It’s not much, but a new design is being put in place. It is not radically different, but I’m doing this design in tableless XHTML and CSS, something that I feel will be very clean and efficient. With this new design, and new year, I decided to do a sort of retrospective of my years working on this site. I’ve archived the old versions of the Eva Monkey site for people curious how this site and my web designs sentiment has progressed over the last several years. Included is some commentary about the designs. This design, referred to as Version 3 “True”, is still being developped, and has not had some features implemented, such as the template system I’m hoping to get working, so that people might choose their favorite theme. I have hopes that it will be along soon.
Other site versions:
Version 0
Spring 2002
Version 1: Red Cross
Fall 2002 to January 30th, 2004
Version 2: Demo

Version 2: Cold Gaze

Version 3
April 1st, 2005 to December 31st 2005
Version 3: True

Gainax is holding a character design contest through January 20th for a new character in an upcoming cell phone game. The character will be in the same class as Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and the others, and will be along the same lines as characters like Mana Kirishima and Megumi Yamagishi.
I don’t know specifics, whether it’s open to people outside Japan or not, but apparently submissions are made by mail, so if you can mail it to the address under the proper criteria, then why not?

Gainax has formally opened an online Eva store, with quite a thuggin spash screen I might add. It would be nice if it had an English version, or if there was instruction for english speakers to order. Perhaps in time. You’ll find some interesting stuff, such as the new Sachiel, Lilith, and Zeruel girls. I don’t know about you, but this is the first I’ve seen of them as more than a design.
And since when do T-Shirts cost over 40,000 yen? That’s ridiculous!

This winter break has been in the making for quite some time now. I’ve been unable to work actively on Eva Monkey over this fall semester. But as of about 7 o’clock yesterday, I was free of academia. So, what does the next month and a half call for? Lots of anime and internet shenanigans. So you can bet I’ll be making a concerted effort to put some interesting stuff up for people. I’ve now got a good 12 gigabytes worth of Evangelion media, and I’m sure there’s quite a few things worth sharing with everyone.
For starters, while on an image board, I came across this omake comic called Ayanami’s Fans, that’s been scanlated by the fansub group iitran… or iichan. I’m slightly confused by which they go by. Nevertheless, I have collected the pages of the comics into a handy .rar file for your consumption, just click on the image above. It’s nothing to write home about, but it might be of interest to the Eva fan who just can not get enough. The premise revolves around Nerv’s poor public image, and the scheme Misato hatches to improve it.

While on Otaku Generation, I was reminded of the now (hopefully) firmly debunked notion of the Evangelions being based on the four “barons of hell”. For those of you not familiar with this, let me break it down for you. The idea is that there are four demons/devils in some Christian biblical/apocryphal text that are known as the “barons of hell”. One has a large singular eye, one has a single horn, one is blood red with four eyes and two mouths, and the last is completely black with exceedingly long arms. These barons are sometimes referred to as being demons, devils, or originating from the Babylonian gods. This is even brought up as being true and legitimate on the Manga Entertainment audio commentary for the Eva movies. Well, make no mistake about it, this is one bogus fan theory, seemingly hatched to confuse and possibly amuse its creators. Well, I came back across this fairly extensive piece that goes through the various explanations and sources on this, and thoroughly debunks this. An interesting read to say the least.

This week, I was a guest on the Otaku Generation weekly podcast. It was an enjoyable experience. Among other things, we discussed my own involvement in the Evangelion fan scene, as well as some of the usual fare of Evangelion discussion. For many of you, you’ve heard much of this from me in the past, but it’s still interesting to listen to. I’ve been giving their podcasts a listen since I was initially approached to appear on the program, and I have to say that they have a pretty good program going on, and they were even the lead in for a recent NewType USA article about the podcasting scene. Give them a listen, and tell them Monkey sent you.
